Alison and Abe: The Historic Academy of Medicine

WE20150411-Alison-Abe-4265.jpg

Alison and Abe, who told me in advance of their wedding that they are very low key and generally don't like being the center of attention, seemed to enjoy it for this one very special day. Their sense of humor carried them through the day, along with lots of love and laughter from friends and family.

Here are a few favorites, which I chose to tone in black-and-white. Alison and Abe at the The Historic Academy of Medicine just called for that classic look.

I'm an Atlanta wedding photographer who takes soulful, quirky and honest photos ...

I'm also an adventurous traveler and all-round nerd. I love to hike with my beagle/cattle dog Roux and best friend/spouse.

I was born in Atlanta, moved around a lot--30 cities and 5 states--and then came back.

After graduating from the Art Institute of Atlanta, I took a job at asmall newspaper in south Georgia, where I photographedhospital teas, pecan farmers, and beauty queens.

I photographed a biker funeral, death penalty protests andTed Bundy while interning with the Associated Press.

While a photographer for two dailies in Florida, I photographed Ronald Reagan, a train derailment and the dedication of a screened-in porch.

An unexpected life turn took me to Vermont where I fell in love with Bernie Sanders and on to Indiana, where I edited photos for a major daily, and nerded out getting a master’s and PhD.

After teaching photojournalism at colleges and universities in Florida, Indiana and Mississippi, I returned to Atlanta to earn myfifth degree--a Master's of Divinity.

My passion for storytelling with my camera and my interest in religious diversity led my to the field of wedding photojournalism.

I have documented weddings large and small, Unitarian and Pagan, indoors and out, Christian and Muslim, in backyards and in churches. The most exotic wedding I have photographed took place in Mexico and was officiated by aMayan shaman.

When I'm not photographing weddings, portraits or corporate events, I work on personal photo projects, visit friends in amemory-care home, and volunteer at a recovery center.

Elizabeth and Bruce's Delightful Academy of Medicine Wedding

Michelle Harrison at MyDreamzEventz helped Elizabeth and Bruce put together a warm and wonderful wedding at the Historic Academy of Medicine. Because Elizabeth and Bruce have an appreciation of photography that is beyond the traditional, I really pushed myself at their wedding to work more in a style that is truly my own. I have always been a street photographer at heart, and so I find myself bringing more and more of that street photography ethic to my wedding and event photography. I am surprised and delighted when my clients really "get" what I'm doing. Thanks, Liz and Bruce!

Saed and Nate's Academy of Medicine wedding was joyful beyond words. Bride and groom laughed and danced and hugged and kissed their way through the day.

Academy of Medicine Wedding | Saed and Nate

130316-Saed-Nates-Wed-2.jpg

What a wedding and dance party! Saed and Nate, friends and family gathered at the stately The Historic Academy of Medicine for a delightful ceremony and reception. Before the wedding they said their vision of their wedding included a "fun, laid-back, but elegant" ceremony, that would "turn into a dance party!" And that is just what they got. Two minor faux pauxs occurred. One of Saed's bridesmaids bought the wrong color dress. Thankfully, the maid of honor was able to wear the dress, which set her apart from the other bridesmaids and seemed natural to those at the wedding. The groom ordered six bowties for his six groomsmen -- and forgot to order one for himself. Two groomsmen made a last minute visit to a department store and returned with a bow tie for the groom that was just a tad lighter than the groomsmen's ties. Everything else about the wedding went off without a hitch.

One of their friends made the delectable cake decorated with cream-colored flowers. Saed and bridemaids carried flowers with fiddlehead ferns (my favorite) designed by "On Occasions of Atlanta." The folks at "Proof of the Pudding" provided the savory salads, entrees and side dishes. The staff from the Academy of Medicine made sure everything went off without a hitch.

Here is a sneak peak of a few images from the night:
