Nathan and Mary Martha kept each other laughing during their engagement session in beautiful Pine Lake, Georgia. Before the session, Mary Martha told me, “We are both goofy, especially Nathan, and it tends to be infectious!”

Fun, laughter, love … yep, infectious all of them.

I have a complicated relationship to photography contests. On the one hand, it’s nice to win an award or two here or there. On the other, it’s a very bad idea to let you ego get caught up in what other photographers (they’re always the judges) think of your work.

Thanks to fellow Pine Laker Tommie Storms, I was hired to photograph the Georgia Wheelchair Basketball State Championship that took place in Macon earlier this year.

When I was a student at the Art Institute of Atlanta a few years back, I called Manny Rubio, an amazing photographer to interview him about working for Sports Illustrated. (Don’t ask me how I found his number in pre-internet days, because I have no recollection.)

He graciously took my call and answered my questions … a lot of them.

National Association of Professional Development Schools Conference took place at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Atlanta in February of this year.

The schedule included roundtable discussions, research presentations, committee meetings, symposiums and awards ceremonies. Needless to say, there were a lot photo opportunities.

The wedding photojournalist association has added engagement photography to their contest competitions. And I’ve taken the opportunity to enter a few of my favorite engagement images.

I’m happy to report that I took home three awards in 2018. Here are the winners. Thanks to the couples who were so fun and funny, and warm and loving.

Every now and then we branch out from wedding photography to create images for brands looking to show off their their work in magazine-quality photographs.
