The Juror: Photo Buckhead 2018

Recently, I had a photograph accepted into the Atlanta Photography Group’s Photo Buckhead Show 2018. While attending the opening of the show, I decided to take a few street photography style photos of those in attendance.

Juror Michael James O’Brien, a renowned American photographer who is currently the Associate Chair of Photography at Savannah College of Art and Design, here in Atlanta, took everyone on a tour of the show and told us some of the thought process behind his selection of the winners.

Just Bakery: Doing Good in the World

One of the great things about photography is that it’s a creative outlet that can be used to show off the good work being done in the world

So I was delighted when Leah Lonsbury asked me to photograph the work of Just Bakery, a non-profit that trains, certifies, and employs refugees at a living wage.

Lonsubry, who is the Executive Director of the non-profit describes the work of the bakery. “We partner with our bakers to create diverse, life-giving community and economic security as they settle into their new homes and lives in the Atlanta area.”

And the folks who work for Just Bakery? They have fun sifting flour, mixing dough, and baking bread and cookies.

Lauren and Kevin’s Engagement Session

Lauren and Kevin admit they are bad bowlers. But they love it anyway. Because it was bad bowling that brought them together.

Lauren invited Kevin to a Halloween-themed bowling party, and … they had fun bowling poorly together. Despite their deficits as bowlers, they continued to see each other.

And they’re glad they did. Because now they’re engaged and excited to spend the rest of their lives together.

Lauren says she loves Kevin’s “kind, chocolate brown/hazel (it depends on sunlight) eyes.” But it’s more than his good looks that stole her heart.

She loves the way he helps her out and has always been “super generous and giving, both towards me and others.”

He’s a great chef who made dinner almost every night while Lauren was in law school.

Plus, according to Lauren, he gives great hugs, “like a warm, electric blanket.”

Kevin says that in addition to Lauren’s obvious good looks, “she's one of the most empathetic people I've ever met.” Plus, “she's very caring and thoughtful and is, unfailingly, a good person. “

The two share a lot of interests. The never really disagree about what they want to do, and Kevin says, “she even makes just watching TV together a good night.

Our Latest B'not Mitzvah Shoot

Here are a few favorites from the awesome B'not Mitzvah party we photographed at the Metropolitan Club in May. For those who aren't familiar, a boy celebrates a bar mitzvah, a girl celebrates a bat mitzvah. Twin girls celebrate a b'not mitzvah, the plural of bat mitzvah. 

Reaching the age of bar or bat Mitzvah signifies becoming a full member of the Jewish community with the obligations that come with it. Friends and family usually celebrate this coming of age with a huge party. Here's how one family celebrated.

I love photographing young people celebrating this important life event.
